The note on my desk read, "Divorced, drunk, and covered in cat hair--why???"

It was, ahem, my shorthand for "This is a new book which ought not to have been lent to other libraries. Why, therefore, is it in a neighboring village?"

But the explanation takes all the fun out of it. :)

Never apologize, never explain. ;-)

Perhaps it was checked out and then returned to the other library?

How did you develop your shorthand?

No such luck--it was checked *out* to another library. The reference person I talked to later confirmed that they do send new books to other libraries--but I threw my weight around for once and (with the backing of the director) we put a stop to it. (If we don't send new books to the libraries within our "consortium", imho, we shouldn't send them to non-consortium libraries, either.)

My shorthand basically consists of the major words that will make me remember the concept. The number of major words I jot down depends on the amount of time I have in which to write them--usually not much. But this was such a steam-coming-out-of-my-ears topic that the title was enough (and evocative). :)

Love the short hand - I'm jotting it down on a note-pad of mine to bring me peace of mind at relevant points in the future!
