The ladybugs are all swarming desperately at the windows, and I'm getting restless too. I can't wait for it to get warmer so I can go on long walks in the woods, or starlight walks. I like walking at night, even though this is a very stupid thing to do. You might run into somebody you don't want to, or maybe trip over a bear. There's something you're supposed to do with bears: is it bark like a dog or wave your arms? Or does that just infuriate them? Maybe the best thing to do is just make a quick exit, pursued by bear. (Sorry, the reference just had to be made.)

Speaking of local wildlife, it was fairly quiet at the library today. I helped a former tax accountant find the right tax forms (that's what you call ironic), cataloged 15 travel books, questioned the usefulness of "miscellaneous" as a musical category (aka the "I don't know what this is, but it sure ain't music" category), erased confidential information from a floppy, kicked three people off the computers, and ate six chocolate kisses. Long day.

In other news, I just finished Seduction of the Crimson Rose (which is, I hasten to say, a lot more innocent than it sounds) and since reading it over and over again is not an option, I'm looking for book suggestions. Has anyone read anything Secret History of the Pink Carnation-ish (which is to say, light and fluffy, happy endings only, please, preferably Regency but not required, strong female characters a must) that they would recommend? Many thanks in advance.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Seriously, the author better have a more appropriate title for the next one, because it was hard enough to slink out of the library with this. I think I lost all my street cred.

I just picked up my copy of Seduction today. But I won't get to it for a few weeks. I'm glad to know it was good. I loved the first one, was bored by the second, liked the third and was still anxiously awaiting this one.

There are some wonderful Regency authors out there. Mary Balogh springs to mind. But I will give this more thought.

When you see a bear, you are supposed to back slowly away if it sees you. Basically try not to be a threat. Don't run. Black bears aren't going to chase you for the most part unless you are acting threateningly. Make sure they can hear you coming so you avoid the encounter altogether. If you're out at night, sing, whistle, or talk to yourself. I think drums might also work, but I don't know how into it you want to get--playing a one-woman show in the woods at night might puzzle your neighbors.

On the other hand, apparently the advice for grizzly bears involves appearing non threatening at a far distance, threatening at a medium distance, and non threatening at a close distance (as in, the distance where the bear is about to take a swipe at you--you don't want to be threatening at that distance but just curl up and hope it loses interest--and present your back not your stomach or face to it).

Aren't you glad you live in New England?

Turelas (do you remember the Quenya name I gave you?), you have become the stereotypical prudish-on-the-outside-but-inwardly-passionate librarian who wears her hair in a bun (or a braid) and takes home romance novels. It's adorable!

I do not! I do not! ::jumps up and down:: (Have you read them?) Also, I'm not *prudish*, am I?? ::is worried::

I guess I need to do more fun reading, since I can't think of a single thing to recommend to you that fits these guidelines. I'm reading A.S. Byatt's Elementals, a collection of short stories, in between other things, and that's very good--she's such a poised and elegant writer--but more introspective and closely observed than light and fluffy. (There's next to no dialogue.)

Actually, have you read Lynne Truss? Apart from Eats Shoots and Leaves? If you can get your hands on The Lynne Truss Treasury, which is her four pre-ESAL books in one volume, I think you'd enjoy those, especially Tennyson's Gift. It lurks on remainder tables and in used bookstores...

I've read "Eats Shoots", but not the "Treasury"--I'll have to look for that. :)
